Radar Testing

On the 25th March 2009, we tested our radar, pre-installation at Vallee de la Sionne, at the Weissfluhjoch snow chute in Davos, Switzerland. The figure below shows the snow about to be released from the chute. The large amount of metal around the chute provided a difficult test for the system as such surfaces are highly reflective.
An interpretation of the radar intensity range-time plot is given below. The velocity estimated from the radar returns matched that for other sensors in the flow. When an instrument is using 0.75 m range gates for a flow travelling 10 m, the resolution is perhaps rather coarse. However, 0.75 m range gates for an avalanche travelling 2 km is another thing entirely. Hence, it is at the field scale that our instrument comes into its own.
